Fourth of July weekend has come and gone. If you’re like us, you’re full and knee-deep in leftovers. Even if you didn’t host the festivities you’re bound to come in contact with at least some leftovers. So in the spirit of reducing waste and using what you have in a more creative way than just reheating it in a microwave, here are our favorite ways to repurpose Fourth of July leftovers.
HAMBURGER ‘N HOT DOG CHILI
I use every excuse to eat chili. I don’t care if it’s 100 degrees out, chili is always good. A great hack is to chop up leftover grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and throw them into a big pot of chili. It’s delicious and livens up your chili.
LEFTOVER FAJITAS
Fajitas are another classic way to use leftovers. Whenever my mom makes tenderloin we like to save some for fajitas the next day. I actually like leftover meat fajitas better than normal fajitas! It might just be because I hate wasting food, but I swear it just tastes better and more flavorful.
You can use leftover grilled chicken, shrimp, veggies, really anything that you think would taste good inside of a tortilla. It is also a great time to whip out those leftover dips (queso, guac, 7-layer dip) and add those to your fajitas.
ONE POT POTATO, SAUSAGE, & VEGGIE BOWL
This year we made Wisconsin Beer Brats for the 4th. I knew we’d have leftovers so I plan to make this One Pot Potato, Sausage, and Veggie Bowl. This is one of those recipes where you can toss in whatever you want and it’ll still taste good.
LEFTOVER BUN CROUTONS
A fun way to use leftover hot dog and hamburger buns is to turn them into croutons!
There are a couple of ways to make croutons, but I find the easiest way is to bake them in the oven.
Preheat the oven to 375 F.
Cut the buns into cubes, depending on how big or small you like your croutons.
Line a baking sheet with parchment or a silpat and add the cubed buns.
Drizzle them with olive oil and season with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning and garlic powder and toss well to combine. Spread them into a single layer.
Bake for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking, until golden brown.
Remove and let cool.
