When it comes to eating habits, youâre typically a grazer or a three-square meals-a-day kind of person. Or if youâre like us, youâre bothâ snack lovers who never miss a meal. We were vegging out on our momâs homemade trail mix recently when we realized that we never really talk much about those âlittle meals eaten between mealsâ in our Weekly Digest. We decided itâs time to change that, so this week, our Digest is for the grazer. Snack away!

Speaking of our Momâs homemade trail mixâŚ.
Our family loves trail mix, but we donât always love whatâs in the pre-mixed bags (Iâve never been a fan of those cubed dried fruits). But when you make trail mix yourself youâre in control of the ingredients and quantities of each â the nut-to-chocolate ratio is important. Trader Joeâs has a great selection of nuts, dried fruit, seeds, and chocolate (chocolate-covered cherriesđđ¤¤). I never thought to add banana chips to it until I tried my momâs version and they make the perfect salty bite!
Last year, all we thought about was apple dip. We could not get enough of this stuff (is it bad we ate it almost every day??). This creamy apple dip recipe comes together super quick. The base is plain Greek yogurt sweetened with a touch of honey, cinnamon, peanut butter (or peanut butter powder), and granola added for crunch. We eat it with sliced apples (hence the name), and hands down, this is the perfect mid-day snack.
If you want to try a more seasonal variety this pumpkin pie version is delightful.
We also went hard for cottage cheese. This cottage cheese dip is loaded with pecorino and black pepper for an addicting âcacio e pepeâ flavor. You can also create different flavored dips by keeping the cottage cheese base and swapping out the add-ins. For example:
Ranch: cottage cheese + ranch packet
Blue Cheese: cottage cheese + blue cheese + black pepper + buttermilk
Spicy: cottage cheese + sriracha or buffalo sauce
Every time I make a homemade cracker I feel like Martha Stewart. I especially love using my sourdough discard to create delicious little salty sourdough crackers. During COVID, when we were all getting very creative in the kitchen, I made my first batch of âCheez-itâ dupes. My family ate them all within minutes. Not only were they delicious, but there is also something very rewarding about recreating a store-bought favorite and knowing every ingredient that went into it â no weird oils or preservatives in these.

I recently made a batch to take on our trip to the Laplands and used them for the base of a Chex-mix-inspired snack. Surprisingly, I couldnât find pretzels at Trader Joeâs but I added pistachios and tangy rolled tortilla chips to spice things up!
Hummus is one of our all-time favorite snacks. We like to eat it with cucumbers, carrots, pita chips, and crackers. Jackson likes to add giardiniera on top for a spicy pickled kick. A good homemade hummus is not at all comparable to store-bought. It may take some time and effort, but if you make a big batch and eat it all week, it is so worth it.
This hummus is light, creamy, and absolutely delicious. You can serve it with vegetables and pita chips for the perfect snack/appetizer or as the base of a hummus bowl!
Have fun snacking on these snacks! đ
